A first action day on marine litter was organized by EUCC-D on Sept.17h in Warnemünde. The International Coastal Clean-up Day from Ocean Conservancy has been the frame for this meeting of several different organisations in Warnemünde to inform and present their work. An amazing mixture of so different organisations: the Parliament of the Fish - a theatre with children performing a story about trash in the sea; an ocean museum - Ozeaneum Stralsund; German youth hostel network - DJH; an environmental organisation - NABU; an institute for ocean research in the Baltic Sea - IOW; the Tourist Information Warnemünde; the EUCC as the organiser of this event, the European Coastal Union Germany and myself as an artist working with marine litter from this beaches.
We did a little beach clean-up on the cleaned beach, one of the most frequented beaches in northern Germany. During the summer season the beach is cleaned up every morning by a lot of persons and a new special machine. Although we collected about 3 kilos of small trash - 80% cigarette butts! Depressing!
I hope this is the start of a great networking! Stopping marine litter together!

I need to write about green washing. The ICC is a fantastic action day to do something to keep the Oceans clean.
I have a big problem with a participant in Germany: AIDA Friends of the Seas. It is an organisation of AIDA Cruise Lines that stands for pure green washing. Cruise ships are severe ocean polluters causing big damage to the oceans and the entire environment. To subscribe for a beach clean up is putting up a smoke screen to avert from the disastrous environmental record of Cruise ships. Green washing policy par excellence. It is a shame!
I think it is damaging the "clean" image of the ICC, the reputation and credibility of that fantastic world wide action day.
Shame on you AIDA Freunde der Meere!

Nice and windy weather on Saturday. This time again most items were plastic sheets and the classic single use take away, balloons, sweet-wrappers. As always cigarette butts en masse - smokers are pigs!
The beach has been relatively clean - on a gravel beach you don't find that much sun bathers leaving stuff behind. The storm season bringing trash in from the sea is coming soon.

I will do a beach clean-up on Elmenhorst beach on Saturday September 17th at 14:00. If you are interested please bring some hand shoes and put on sneakers or shoes - it is a gravel beach.
